Checklist Comments

After arriving on Scilly we caught the 12:15 ferry to Bryher. After landing we headed south to Popplestone Fields and soon found the Blackburnian Warbler on its 10th day and the third UK record. After seeing the warbler we headed to Hell Bay Hotel for lunch and then headed onto Gweal Hill to enjoy the views, we then headed back to the Church Quay and back to our hotel.

    Details

First winter bird found on 14th October and still present for its 10th day. Showing well in Pittisporum hedges around Popplestone Fields and regularly catching Common Earwig and calling occasionally. The bird was last reliably seen on 28th October, a stay of some 14 days which is remarkable given previous records of the species in the UK.

There have been three previous records of this species in the UK as follows:

2009 - Hirta, St Kilda, Western Isles, 12th-14th September. probably first-winter male.
1988 - Fair Isle, Shetland 7th October, fist winter male.
    1961 - Skomer, Pembrokeshire 5th October.
