August is an interesting month of the year. While most parts of the country continue to receive heavy rainfall, the amount of water and the associated increase in vegetation and prey items stimulates changes in birdlife both locally and in terms of long-distance migration.

Bountiful Monsoon

Continuing with July’s trend of emerging skulkers, here is another relatively difficult-to-see bird. The Rain Quail is recorded more often in August than at any other time of the year.

Passage Migrant Count

The Bird Conservation Society in Gujarat (BCSG) is organising its 3rd Passage Migrant Count that involves observing and recording the passage migrants birds of Kachchh, Gujarat. The date of the counts are 13- 15 September 2024, however registrations are open now. Registration can be completed using this form. Please note that a registration fee of Rs. 1500 is required, which will help partially support the initiative. More details here.

From 2nd to 5th August 2024, birders in Kerala will participate in “Beachcombing for Shorebirds: A Survey of the Birds in Migration to the Kerala Coast.” Join the effort to track these migratory species! See details here.
