The reviewing team of eBird in Spain
Some users may not know it, but for eBird to function, it takes thousands of volunteers around the world to take care of the reviewing process. In Spain we have been creating a team of reviewers that has been growing in the last four years and that covers most of the territory, with regional and provincial reviewers. But what are the functions of a reviewer?
Reviewers perform three main tasks:
- Studies, validates or discard unusual observations, either because they are rare species or in higher numbers than usual.
- Review Hotspots suggested by eBird users.
- Establish filters that determine when a species is present in a region, as well as adequate numbers depending on the time of year.
Currently the team consists of the following people:

Those provinces that are currently vacant are being covered by the regional coordinator.
To establish this team we have approached birders that use eBird, who know their area, and the birds that inhabit it, well. They have to take into account a lot of information that is being submitted. There are also regular updates and a continuous exchange of information between reviewers. Once a year, we celebrate a meeting in which we exchange impressions, clear up doubts, establish criteria and develop new aspects that allow us to improve eBird in Spain.
Although we still need to cover a few provinces, this being one of the current priorities of the review team, the progress made by eBird in Spain has been enormous in the last two years, and we are convinced that it will continue to grow even more. We encourage you to join in and participate!
