The Inti Tanager, a new tanager species for Bolivia and Peru

Seen for the first time in Peru in the year 2000 and discovered in Bolivia in 2011, the Inti Tanager, whose name alludes to the sun, was described after years of efforts. The remote location – in the Machariapo Valley of Bolivia and the low Andean slopes in southeast Peru – explains why this species existed without detection during a long period and why studying it was so difficult.

This tanager belongs to a new genus, Heliothraupis, proposed because the species is so distinct from the rest of the tanagers. The Inti Tanager is considered an intratropical migrant, traveling from its area of reproduction in Bolivia to its “wintering” grounds in the southeast of Peru. Migration is a rare behavior for the tanager family.
