Saw one adult Great Horned Owl, sex unknown but almost certainly male based on its distinct markings.
Heard one Great Horned Owl make begging calls, sex and age unknown but almost certainly adult female based on previous observations of the female of this pair making begging calls.
Didn't hear any typical songs of adult males or females, and it's very unusual to not hear the adult male typical song. The wind was strong enough to make noticeable noise, making it harder to hear birds.
7:23 PM: I heard Great Horned Owl high pitched begging calls that almost certainly came from inside of their cavity nest. The calls were very soft and weak and barely audible.
Later the begging calls became louder and more frequent.
7:55 PM: Sunset.
8:02 PM: I saw an adult about 15 feet above the ground perched on a distant tree that is broken and at about a 45 degree angle to the ground. I did not hear it vocalize.
8:07 PM: Saw an adult on another tree that is much closer to the nest, in the middle part of a tall tree. Apparently the same adult because the owl was no longer on the first tree, although I didn't see it leave. This owl had about three distinct white dots on its side. I believe the male of this pair has those dots but not the female. The owl I saw at 8:02 PM also appears to have those same markings.
8:17 PM: Stopped day time checklist, and started nocturnal time checklist.
8:49 PM: Saw an owl on a branch about 20 feet from their nest. It was moving around and possibly eating a small critter. It was too dark for me to see well. It didn't stay there long.
