Sterna sp.
Number observed: 1Details
Unidentified adult bird, in full br. plumage. At first glance resembles Roseate Tern, but some features even suggest a possible hybrid of Roseate and Common Tern. Compared to Common Tern, it is similar in size and overall appearance, with paler plumage; bill appears longer and somewhat thinner, all dark with reddish base; tail streamers longer, surpassing wingtips; paler bluish-grey upperparts. Greyish undersides contrasting with paler cheeks. Shows a different wingtip pattern (paler/newer than surrounding Common Terns), suggesting a complete pre-alternate moult of outer primary feathers. Eastern races of Common Tern are discarded as they tend to have darker plumage, shorter black bill and dark legs
