    Details

Flycatcher about Eastern Phoebe-sized. One of the streaked (lower-case) flycatchers, superficially similar to Sulphur-bellied but obviously smaller and smaller-billed. Solid dark brown crown, and thick eyeline or mask of the same color, with broad pale stripes above and below the eyeline/mask. Back brown, with pale edged feathers particular the coverts, primaries solid brown, underparts very pale with perhaps the slightest hint of yellowish wash with thin, finely-marked darker streaks from the throat down to the belly. Upperside of tail strongly rufous, underside of tail an even brown with hints of the rufous color of the top around the edges. Extended wing on underside showed similar streaking and subtle yellow wash as breast on underwing coverts. Underside of the bill shows the feathering relatively flat along the base of the mandible, rather than extending onto the underside of the middle of the mandible.

From the other streaked, masked flycatchers (except Piratic) from its smaller size and small bill. From Piratic by its slightly larger size and longer tail, and, importantly, the extent of rufous on the upperside of the tail and very pale underparts without strongly yellow tones.

The bird had been reported yesterday (10/15) to a private facebook group as in Port Austin but without specific location details. I lucked into the bird at the corner of Pt Aux Barques and Wallace roads, bird on the northwestern side of that corner, actively flycatching very close at hand along the roadside and in perfect light. Was still there when I left around 1pm.
