Programs and Contests
Various birding clubs, magazines, and other organizations offer mentorship programs, as well as photo, art, and essay contests. These can be a fun way to build expertise, receive feedback for your work, and sometimes get cool prizes.
ABA Young Birder of the Year Mentorship Program: This program and contest is sponsored by the American Birding Association. Participants work on modules of their choosing (including field journaling, art, photography, and writing) with mentors providing feedback along the way. This is a great way to build your birding and leadership skills and meet other young birders from around the world.
Junior Duck Stamp Contest: This well-known annual art contest selects winners for several age categories in each stage, as well as a federal winner. Plus, the duck stamp program supports the National Wildlife Refuge System and environmental education programs! For most states, the deadline is in mid-March. Check with your state’s coordinator, though, to confirm your local deadline.
