Identification

A small, short-tailed yellowish finch of dry habitats. It is bright yellow below with a yellow eyebrow and cheek patch. The upperparts are grayish green with streaks. Females are duller colored than males. The pleasant song is a rapid series of high-pitched musical chips. Introduced to the Hawaiian Islands, Mauritius, and Puerto Rico from Africa. On the Hawaiian Islands it is common in dry, grassy and brushy areas on Oahu and Hawaii; recently reported from Maui.
