Identification
A large brightly-colored barbet of forests and forest edges. Distinctive with its bright yellow bill, its dark head, back, and tail, and its bright yellow belly. There is significant regional variation within the species, and throat color can vary from dark blue-purple to lavender depending on the subspecies. Voice consists of a low “oop” or “op-oop” given in slow succession, sometimes for several minutes. Calls include varied harsh and soft notes, similar to those of other barbet species.
