Identification

POWERED BY MERLIN

Large canopy tanager of lowland rainforest. Males are bright yellow with a black head, tail, and wings that have a white patch. Females are yellow overall with duller olive-gray head, wings, and tail. Usually found high in the canopy; frequently in pairs with mixed-species flocks. If you come across an individual, take a moment to look for other tanagers, as this species is one of the main leaders of mixed-species flocks and often attracts other flocking species. Listen for its calls, a series of sharp, rising “bree?” notes, which can also give clues about the locations of canopy flocks.
