Medium-sized storm-petrel with white underparts contrasting with a black eye patch and brownish crown. In flight shows a gray uppertail and a pale bar dividing the dark flight feathers from the paler coverts. Long-billed with rounded wing tips and long legs that project beyond the long tail. When foraging glides and bounds across the sea surface with wings open, almost bouncing like a skimmed stone.
