Distinctive dark babbler with a needle-sharp bill. Note arching pale brow stripe and scaled appearance. Typically forages in lower and middle levels of broadleaf hill forest; favors areas with dense damp undergrowth such as shaded forest streamsides. Song consists of a short burst of insistent whistles followed by a quick jumble of piping notes.
