Female is dull brown, with paler brown underparts and a buffy throat. Like other niltavas, forages primarily in middle levels, often with other species. Similar to Rufous-bellied and Fujian Niltavas, but male has a rufous notch in the dark throat and female lacks blue neck crescent and white throat strap. Song is a series of undulating, clear whistles, sometimes mixed with short trills.
