Identification

POWERED BY MERLIN

Medium-sized antpitta restricted to the Perijá Mountains, which lie north of the main chain of the Andes and straddle the border between Colombia and Venezuela. Plumage is mostly light brown, with a buffy tinge to its head and throat, pale belly, and white eyering. Similar to Rusty-breasted Antpitta, but larger with paler underparts and longer legs. Inhabits understory of high elevation cloud forest. Spends most of the time on the ground, but sometimes perches higher, especially when singing. Vocalizations include a short, gargled note repeated every few seconds and a series of clear whistles that accelerates and descends in pitch. Formerly considered to be a subspecies of what used to be called Rufous Antpitta.
