Identification

POWERED BY MERLIN

A distinctive small cuckooshrike with a striking, deep rufous underside, a white eyebrow, and extensive bold white markings in wings. Upperside is black in males, gray in females. Juveniles show a rusty-tinged eyebrow and rust-edged upperpart feathers. Found in pairs or small groups in the canopy. Occurs in most environments with trees, including forests, mangroves, sparsely wooded areas, and gardens, most often in the lowlands but also in the foothills. Calls include strident “pips” and chirps, often given repeatedly. Song is a rapid series of piping notes.
