Identification

POWERED BY MERLIN

As a member of the Purple Swamphen complex, it is a massive blue rail with a huge red bill and enormous red legs. Differs from Western Swamphen in its green back, and from Gray-headed Swamphen in its blue-green head. Breeds in well-vegetated swamps and lakes; often climbs on reeds along the water’s edge as it searches for molluscs, crustaceans, and reed hearts. Very vocal; produces a rich repertoire of odd croaks, hoots, and whistles often at night.
