Identification
A rotund, short-legged ground-dwelling dove that usually runs rather than flies when startled. Male is unmistakable, dark-bodied with a purplish iridescent shoulder, a bright white chest and face, and a blackish crown patch that extends to the neck. Female similar but has a beige belly, chest, and head with a dark spot behind the eye. Apparently rarely vocal, but has been heard giving a typical dove-like “coo.”
