Identification
Large, rusty pigeon confined to the Marañon drainage of northwestern Peru. Its range may extend to extreme southern Ecuador, but evidence is lacking. Plumage is mostly reddish with a gray belly, shoulder, and rump. It has a red base to the bill, a red eye-ring, and a yellowish to orange eye. Compared to Pale-vented Pigeon, which is fairly common in extreme southern Ecuador, Peruvian has a red base to the bill, lacks a pale tail band, and has an undertail that is not paler than the belly. Inhabits woodland and desert near watercourses.
