Identification

A tiny finch of grassy areas. Key features include the brown back, red rump, orange face, and bright red bill. Found in grasslands, forest clearings, and thickets in its native range in Africa. Introduced to Japan, Spain, and the Hawaiian Islands. In Hawaii, it is fairly common in dry grassy and brushy areas in central Maui and may be spreading. Call is a high, thin “see.”
