Identification
A plain, chunky bird with a “big mouth.” Found in foothill rainforest of western Ecuador and western Colombia. It’s mostly olive-brown with pale eyes and a stout bill. Forages at middle levels of the forest and may join mixed-species flocks. Sings incessantly early in the morning, giving loud whistles intermixed with scratchy twitters and squeaks. It can open its beak surprisingly wide while singing, giving the impression that it’s shouting.
