Endemic to central and eastern Java, though nearing extinction in the wild due to poaching for the cagebird trade. Black above and orange below, with a long, graduated tail. Very similar in appearance to the White-rumped Shama, with which it was formerly regarded as one species, though ranges do not overlap. Forages in shady forest undergrowth, where often difficult to see; loud, vibrant song instead draws attention.
