Identification
A large honeyeater of mid and upper-montane forest on the Huon Peninsular. Sooty-gray plumage, white scaling on the back and belly, pale blue behind the eye coming to a point and a white and red line running from the base of the bill connecting with a red wattle across the base of the throat. Co-occurs with Ornate and Cinnamon-browed Melidectes, but Huon is larger, lacks Ornate’s breastband and has a white stripe down its forehead. Call, loud ringing shrieks “wawww! weeee! weeee! weeee!” sometimes descending into an excited “wip-wip-wip!”
