Similar in size to Green Woodpecker, but slightly slimmer with a less marked face mask, a uniform gray head, and darker eyes. Male has a small red crown (absent in female); both sexes have a narrow black malar (mustache) stripe. Looks short beaked in flight. Calls are more melancholic than Green Woodpecker’s; gives “kick” calls and drums more often than Green. Occupies a range of forest habitats as well as orchards and gardens.
