Identification

A medium-sized tern with a deeply forked tail. Similar to Sooty Tern, but the back is gray (not black) and the white patch on the forehead extends behind the eye. Common on some of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. On the main islands it nests in small numbers only on Moku Manu islet off the eastern coast of Oahu. Rarely seen from shore.
