Unique partridge of Java’s eastern highlands, where it inhabits primary forest from 500 to 2200 meters. Dark gray overall with a distinctive bright white face, which sets it apart from all other gamebirds in its limited range. Forages on the forest floor, often in small groups; typically quite shy, but can become accommodating at established feeding stations. Song is a slowly rising series of “whew” notes that eventually become a rapid, feverish, seemingly endless chant. Pairs often duet; one member will give the aforementioned song, while the other gives a lower, slower “woo-hoo.”
