Identification
Gangly and prehistoric-looking, this is the largest woodpecker in the world. Gray all over, with a pink blush on the cheeks and a pale orange bare patch on the throat. Thin neck and long body give it an over-stretched, even starved, appearance. Swoops through the forest in small family flocks, giving loud rolling whinnying calls and hammering powerfully on trees. Confined to pristine forests with an abundance of tall trees.
