Found almost exclusively in southern Arizona and western Mexico in deserts with large cacti or large trees. Black-and-white barring on the back and plain buffy breast and head. Neck is all brown. Only adult males show red crowns. In flight, rump is barred black-and-white like the rest of the back. Visits feeders and suburban areas. Nests in cavities.
