Identification

Attractive ground-dwelling bird in the same family as a pipit. Common breeder on Arctic tundra from Alaska to Russia, winters in Southeast Asia; rare elsewhere in North America. Slender and long-tailed, bright yellow below with paler throat, thin white eyeline, and grayish-olive back. Tail is black with white outer feathers; often pumped up and down as it walks on the ground. Young birds lack yellow color, but have unique head pattern. Often seen near water. Listen for high-pitched piercing call note.
