Identification

POWERED BY MERLIN

A large hawk with a confusing range and unclear identification criteria. Resident in the Himalayas and a breeder in adjacent areas of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. A large “typical” buzzard, brown overall with brown streaking on the breast, dark upper “trousers,” and black edges and “elbows” on the underwing. Extremely similar to Upland and Eastern Buzzards, but look for Himalayan’s larger size, more densely marked underwings, and longer, eagle-like proportions, while the other two species show darker tails and paler underparts.
