Identification
This large cuckoo’s combination of a bright red face, staring pale eyes, and pale upper and red lower mandible lend it a clownlike countenance. Dark glossy greenish above, rich chestnut-brown below, it is sluggish and mammal-like in movements among foliage of the upper and middle forest levels, sometimes foraging with other species in lowland and hill forests. Gives hollow “knocking” calls.
