Uncommon to fairly common in varied open habitats with a rocky component, from crags and boulder fields to buildings and quarries. Migrants often found along rocky coasts. Feeds mainly on or near the ground, perching rather upright; sings from prominent perches such as corners of buildings. Both sexes have a bright orangey tail, best seen when flashed open or in flight. Male is slaty blackish overall, female smoky grayish overall; compare with warmer-toned female Common Redstart, which is a bird of woodland and scrubby habitats.
