Identification

POWERED BY MERLIN

Small, dark, crested tit. Lack of white on the body (except for large cheek patch) and erect crest separate it from Coal Tit. Black-breasted Tit is extremely similar in appearance but no range overlap (Black-breasted is found in central China, while Rufous-vented is predominantly Central Asian; Chinese range is restricted to Tien Shan mountains of Xinjiang). Rufous vent patch is small and often not visible as the bird moves quickly around overhead in the upper layers of mid- to high-altitude conifer forests.
