This montane raptor has very broad wings and a disproportionately short tail. The black hood is a good mark that stands out at a distance, but the namesake bars on the belly are thin and indistinct. Sexes similar. More often seen flying over forest rather than perched. Often quite vocal; listen for the far-carrying descending whistles, usually repeated.
