Identification

POWERED BY MERLIN

Sleek but sturdy gray bird with fierce yellow eyes. Across much of range, males are gray overall, and females have black-barred rump and underparts. Birds on the West Sumatran islands lack barring in both males and females, while birds on the Kangean Islands (off northeastern Java) have males with barred undertails and females with unmarked pale undertails. Occurs widely in lowland and foothill forest and forest edge, foraging at middle and upper levels, often with other species. Frequently gives loud scratchy screeches, often in pairs or a descending series.
