The American Birding Association, Leica Sport Optics and National Geographic have partnered to create a unique birding experience for young birders and their mentors in the Mid-Atlantic area. The 2nd ABA Mid Atlantic Young Birder Conference is co-hosted by the Delaware Nature Society and the Delmarva Ornithological Society’s Delaware Dunlins Youth Birders Club. This year’s Mid Atlantic Young Birder Conference will again take place on the beautiful grounds of the Ashland Nature Center in Hockessin, Delaware. Bird walks and hawk watching during the peak of fall migration, will feature prominently as will concurrent indoor learning sessions for new and experienced young birders alike, allowing everyone from elementary school through high school age an opportunity to discover birding along with fellow youth birders and experts alike. There will also be special sessions by and for parents, mentors, and club coordinators.
For our keynote presentations, we are very excited to have Jonathan Alderfer, co-author of the acclaimed National Geographic’s Field Guide to the Birds of North America and the Kids Bird Guide of North America along with Ioana Seritan, ABA’s Young Birder of the Year 2013, 14-18 age group. Jonathan and Ioana will deliver a one-two punch that will have everyone excited about birding and its potential to enrich and connect us all, kid or adult. Other special guest presenters and birding leaders will include Jeff Gordon, President of the ABA, George Armistead, Michael O’Brien, Louise Zemaitis, Chris Bennett and other birding professionals. Additional Young Birder presenters include Eric Hughes, ABA’s Young Birder of the Year, 10-13 age group and members of the Upper Mainline YMCA B.B. Kingfishers-1st Place winners of the 2013 World Series of Birding.
