2014 Great Backyard Bird Count
The Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) starts Friday, 14 Feb and extends through Monday, 17 Feb. Last year marked the first year since its inception in 1998 that the GBBC was fully integrated in eBird, and the results were amazing. A total of 137,998 checklists were submitted with 33,464,616 individual birds counted. With checklists coming from 111 different countries, 4258 species (a little under half of the cumulative bird species in the world) were observed over those four days. This year can the global team of eBirders and GBBCers find more than 50% of the species in the world on a single weekend. More than 60%?
New Location Tools
With the success of the Hotspot Explorer rolled out last fall, a new tool to Explore a Location was just launched. Rather than providing data for a specific hotspot, this new explorer lets you view summaries for any county, state, or country.
Through the GBBC portal you can use these same Location tools but see output specific to the GBBC count period. Click here to launch the GBBC Explore a Location page. Click and watch how many species can be found in your country, state, country, or local hotspot on just one weekend.
Live Submissions Map
Viewing the Live Submissions map is always entertaining but it can be amazing during the GBBC when usage is up nearly 200%. Click here to launch the map!
