damp grey overcast with fine misting and intermittent sprinkles, upper 30s with a chill damp wind from ESE; small pockets of bird activity, most of cypress forest silent but for the wind; dogs running off the leash, vehicles parked without paying, not a park ranger to be found.

    Details

    male and female in the same cypress lagoon as usual, the male patrolling while the female rested motionless among the cypress knees

    at least a hundred individuals riding the rough swells several hundred feet out from shore, unable to ID

  3. American Woodcock

    Details

    Joy! spotted the bird's distinctive rolling gait from 100' away on the access road (SR 343) not far from the western trailhead of Long Creek Trail; when I got out of my car to take a photo, the bird scuttled across the road and into leaves by the shoreline of a cypress lagoon; fortunately the bird remained motionless while I drove up slowly, and I was able to get an excellent view of the bird out of my car window from less than ten feet away. Unmistakably American Woodcock, perhaps still lingering by the edge of the first long cypress lagoon adjacent to the access road between trailheads for Fox Run and Long Creek Trail.

    at least one, almost certainly two but couldn't verify, mixed in with a twittering bustle of kinglets and other small birds around the old restroom hut to immediate N of trail center
