walked downstream from Murphy Crossing along SCZ side of Pajaro River for about 45 min. covering about 1 km; a Common Nighthawk was a rare find, but the only species I recorded in my notes; no specific time was recorded
after I'd been poking around for 30 minutes, a nighthawk appeared flying over the river and its northern shore. As I watched it, various features indicated it was a COMMON NIGHTHAWK, less expected than the also rare Lesser. Then I heard it call three times, the distinctive nasal "peent", helping to confirm the ID. It was seen mostly in Santa Cruz Co., but its flight also carried it into Monterey Co. airspace on the south side of the river corridor. I watched it for about 7 minutes, before I lost it flying east over some tall cottonwoods.
