Details
Observed carefully through scope for a good minute or two what appeared to be a light juvenile in flight, then took down notes (transcribed here) to compare to reference materials later. General impression of a smaller gull (Bonaparte's to Ring-billed). Chunky body; not slender or athletic. Relatively small head and thin bill. Wings broad at bases, rather straight-edged and tapering to fine points; did not appear long and narrow. Tail short and narrow, not really noticeable. Warmer brown plumage overall, with obvious pale belly, and fairly obvious white across bases of primaries lending an almost nighthawk-like look. Flight direct, similar to Bonaparte's Gulls, not buoyant like Forster's Tern or leisurely like larger gulls. Did not appear to be pursuing anything, but did bank a couple of times to give more viewing angles. Headed south.
