Alison Davies and I watched the sky from zone 6 of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park parking lot to search for Zone-tailed Hawks among the hundreds of Turkey Vultures soaring above. We found two! There were many kettles of Turkey Vultures well above the main flock flying over. It was hot and sunny with good thermals.

Probably low estimate as there were several kettles high up.

    Details

Medium size hawk mostly black with yellow cere and legs. Wings have narrow bars on both primaries and secondaries. I was able to visualize three wide white bands on the adult’s tail when it was spread. Bands on the immature bird were numerous and narrow and it had several white feathers visible on it’s breast.
