    Details

I first heard the calls as I approached an open area near the stone bench just before the bird took to flight. I would describe it as short chatter-like calls, given quickly in a series and ending abruptly (identical to the second part of the [flight "flush" calls] that can be heard on the Sibley app. I was at a relatively close range when it called, but out of view of the bird (maybe 30 feet away). I'm familiar with these calls and knew right away that this was a shorebird and probably an Upland Sandpiper. I moved quickly towards the departing bird and saw it well as it flew off to the west in a more or less straight line, just above eye level. I heard the bird call three more times in flight (same quick series of notes described above). I saw a medium-sized shorebird flying away at an angle to me, overall dark with long wings. I concentrated first on looking at the bill shape and size, which was short and straight. The head was small and round, with no obvious markings noted. The back showed no major contrasting patterns (such as a contrasting white rump, white back or distinct wing pattern), but I did note some pale feather edgings on the inner wing areas, which created a somewhat speckled pattern. I also noticed two narrow white braces extending down the back on each side, not particularly obvious, but present. I did not see the tail well, but enough to note that it didn't contrast notably with the rest of the back and wings.
