Leg 5 of 12-hour pelagic trip with Island Packers on the Island Explorer. After crossing the Santa Barbara County line again we continued west picking through flocks of shearwaters across the northern end of the Santa Cruz Basin. We encountered a variety of storm-petrels here including crippling looks at a Townsend's and our first Leach's of the day. The Navy was conducting a launch, which would ultimately limit how far west we could travel. Perhaps the highlight of this leg was encountering two Cuvier's beaked whales. Other wildlife included the Cuvier's beaked whales, two minke whales, and 75 long-beaked common dolphins. Weather was overcast, temp in the 60s, winds WNW, water temp of 65.5 F, and 3 to 4-foot swells at 18 seconds. Leaders for the trip included David Pereksta, Joel Barrett, Peter Gaede, Wes Fritz, Bernardo Alps, and Scott and Linda Terrill.
