Checklist Comments

Aboard the tourist catch 'Mourning in Maine' which sailed out of Rockland Harbor, past Owl's Head Light, and into the sound a ways before returning. A two hour cruise; distance approximated. The Franklin's Gull was well off shore, as opposed to all of the LAGUs which were in the harbor. Feel free to contact me at pajaroboy@hotmail.com for more details. I can email photos of field notes/sketches, but likely won't be able to add them to the checklist until the weekend.

*Mega* observed at close range approx. 1 mile out east of the Owl's Head Light. First seen on the water near two HERG, then in flight close to the boat before it settled back down. At first I assumed LAGU until I put bins on it and was elated to see that it was a classic adult FRGU in basic plumage. The bold white primary tips were apparent while folded, as were the thick white eye-arcs and the short dark bill that lacked any droop. The mantle was dark slate, tail white, and the head pattern was the distinct half-helmet of a non-breeding FRGU. The bill tip was blood red, the base was black. In flight, the black-and-white wingtip pattern was apparent, the tip of the rounded wing being white, then a band of black, then another band of white inside that. I sketched field notes from memory as soon as I was ashore, photos of which I will attach when i am able to access wi-fi. I am a visiting birder from CO where FRGU is common. Originally from RI, I'm fully aware of the ID pitfalls between LAGU and FRGU.
