Seen wading 2/3 down Venice Pier. Have crappy photos, but this individual was identified by its silvery gray coloration, black back and cap, long yellow beak, and distinguishing rufous neck though it was not a bright red indicating this bird was a molting adult. Other notable feature was its large size, akin to a western grebe rather than a horned or eared grebe. Unexpected lifer!
