Clear, 1-3 mph wind, 55*F; I parked in the Washburn Day Use Area and walked the boardwalk inland to the campground road. I was looking for the Black-and-white Warbler known to be present. Before I located the bird, Roger Zachary joined me and we soon found the bird after crossing over the smaller pedestrian bridge. We checked the north side of the bridge and the creek before walking a short distance south along the trail to the wetlands hoping to see Allen's Hummingbird. We returned to the boardwalk and headed to the beach where we checked the creek, beach and nearshore waters before returning to the cars. The eBird phone app determined the total distance traveled was 0.84 mile. As this was an out-and-back route in all directions, that distance was cut in half.

    Details

    Continuing male back for at least its second winter. Today this bird was seen in the leafless willows at the northeast side of the campground (not Hwy 1) bridge over San Simeon Creek. Black and white birds with bold black streaks along the otherwise white flanks, bold black streaks in the undertail coverts, black auriculars, and it appeared to be molting in black on the throat. Black head with white cental crown stripe and white supercilium, bold white edges on tertials, and two white wingbars on black wings. (photos)
