Checklist Comments

Seabirding pelagic trip aboard the Stormy Petrel II, from the shelf break offshore to about 900 fathoms (5,400 feet) and back inshore to the shelf break. The warmer Gulf Stream water was right on the shelf today and had been gradually warming as we approached. Winds remained westerly while we were offshore and the wind speed varied from 10 to 15 mph with periods of up to 18 mph. Skies were sunny and clear. We had nice feeding flocks offshore and our time in the deep was productive! At least four Offshore Bottlenose Dolphins were seen on this leg. There was also one butterfly on this leg, looked like a Monarch in the distance, and we saw a few moths out there as well - not sure that some of these were not on the boat originally, but we do tend to see them offshore when we have westerly winds.

    Details

Out of focus images showed a very broad wing bar on this individual ruling out a Red-necked Phalarope which would have a more narrow white bar on the upper wing.

Not sure why this comes up as a high count, this is likely low. Only includes individuals positively identified as dark form birds from photos.

  9. Cory's/Scopoli's Shearwater

    Number observed:  206

    Details

Cory's / Scopoli's - not seen well enough to note underwing and / or photograph. Many of these may have been Atlantic Cory's - we had a lot of them out there today. But there were also good numbers of Scopoli's as well. Some individuals photographed had a dark underside to the outermost visible primary with white in the underside of adjacent primaries, with our current identification criteria these are best left as Cory's / Scopoli's

  12. Number observed:  1

    Details

This falcon flew by right around noon, and was seen well by a handful of us. Photos showed an individual that was dark brown above with streaking below.

  13. passerine sp.

    Number observed:  2

    Details

We had two passerines fly by, no photos, but both looked yellow-bodied and uniformly yellowish above. Maybe one Yellow Warbler? Or a Yellow Palm Warbler? And the other looked like possibly a warbler, but really not seen well enough to be certain.
