    Details

Walking the western side of the lake at first and had forgot my phone so the EBird tracking doesn’t show this part, I only walked to the trees as I was looking at another pair of Grebes then retraced my route back to the car for the camera to photograph another pair of Grebes near the parking area. Then I caught a glimpse of a bird flying low over the water with pulsating wing beats with short glides in between, the wings were curved and stiff when beating, Instantly Common Sandpiper sprung to mind just from the flight action. Side lite so just showing the darker upper parts & breast with the belly clean white with no markings, brief views 3 to 5 seconds at about 25/30 meters then landed out of sight under the bank edge and briefly before flying off along the western side of the lake again brief views again 3 to 5 seconds I didn’t see if it landed. I also didn’t get much on the wing bar but it was bold and seemed to cover the inner & outer wing unlike Spotted. So on size, shape, pattern and distinctive flight action it ruled out other species, at the time I thought Common Sandpiper and kinda shrugged it off as being a fairly uncommon species not realising the significance.
