Redhead x Lesser Scaup (hybrid)
Number observed: 1Details
After researching scaup hybrids and receiving input from Walter M. and Sam B, there is no question about the Redhead parentage but the other seems to be Lesser Scaup. With a group of 3 male Redheads at rest, the bird clearly stood out due to the maroon/purple coloration of the head. After a few minutes they became active and started preening. Being aware of Redhead x Ring-necked Duck, we did not notice anything that pointed to RNDU on this bird. The back and sides were evenly colored, more of a consistent silvery gray like Redhead but with very fine barring. The bill was smaller than REDH and had no white outline. The nail was broad, probably an intermediate trait between LESC & REDH. The structure was mostly REDH like but when active, the crown was slightly peaked and looked much more like LESC.
After several minutes of close study and photos, the birds took flight. The hybrid in question showed a bright white secondary patch that transitioned to gray, I would expect GRSC influence to be more extensive. I would expect more iridescent green with GRSC as well, and perhaps a heavier bill. It is also worth mentioning that there is far more overlap in breeding territory with LESC & REDH as opposed to GRSC & REDH.
