American Herring/Vega Gull
Number observed: 1Details
Continuing juv. Medium size, dirty-brown gull with pink bill tipped black. Pink legs. Initially, preening on a rock in the middle front of the pond. Eventually it flew off and away, turning east down the coast, allowing close view, as it passed in front of me, of its whitish rump and essentially all-black tail (indicating Californian vs. Ring-billed). Tail slaty black without white outer retrices, I couldn't see if the retrices had white bases because of the overlapping whitish upper tail coverts. Primaries unmarked gray. Photos by Sherman Wing later reviewed by Alvaro Jarmilla who identified the bird as a Herring/Vega Gull.
